As the years go on, people have slowly lost interest in the game of baseball. They have gone to sports such as lacrosse, basketball or soccer. Many say it’s because the game is too slow, and it is boring to play. So, they move on to fast paced sports, which they think requires more knowledge and is harder to play. But, baseball is an incredibly hard sport to play. You have to know exactly what to do wherever the ball is hit. Not only that, but you have to have the skill to hit the ball in the general direction that you want it to go in. If you do not, many teams will pick up on trends on where you hit it and they will shift in that direction making it incredibly hard for you to get a hit.
The fact that many people are leaving the sport is very bad for the sport. It is losing tons of talent to other sports, which makes it harder for the sport to grow if there are not as many star players. When I was younger and played in Little League, our All-Star team lost its best pitcher to lacrosse. This was very bad for us because we had no depth, and we ended up doing very poorly the following season, going 11-2 the first year and 4-8 the year after that. It’s as easy as losing one key player to completely throw off your whole season. Hopefully the MLB will continue to make strides to keep the youth involved in baseball, because the sport needs it.
